Dave Matthews Band

Biography

The South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews formed the Dave Matthews Band in Virginia in the early '90s. Featuring Matthews, Stefan Lessard, Leroi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, and Carter Beauford, the group's music presents a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting.
The band built up a strong word-of-mouth following in the early '90s by touring the country constantly, concentrating on college campuses. In addition to amassing a sizable following, their self-released album, Remember Two Things, sold well for an independent release; soon, they were attracting the attention of majors. Signing with RCA, the Dave Matthews Band released their major-label debut, Under the Table & Dreaming, in the fall of 1994. By spring of 1995, the record had launched the hit single "What Would You Say" and sold over a million copies.

VMAs hit Sin City

Growing up, one of the things I used to look forward to watching most on television were the awards shows. I'd stay up past my usual bedtime, watching my favorite artists duke it out for awards and also put on breath-taking performances that somehow seemed unique to awards shows. Only at these awards shows could Michael Jackson break out of no where and pop and lock with Nsync. Remember that time Britney Spears (pre-insanity) and Christina Aguilera paid tribute to Madonna, only to lady get some lesbian action on in front of the whole world? The Grammys have always been the dullest of them all, but my favorite show has consistently been The MTV Video Music Awards!

Perhaps it's because MTV always makes it a point to have that "water cooler" moment but overall, the VMAs have always been the "fun" awards show. The celebrities seem more daring, more outgoing and more excited to be there than any other awards show. Everyone is expected to have a good time and you know at least something memorable will happen.

This year, for the first time, MTV will be broadcasting the VMAs from Las Vegas! I think this is a perfect match. The most raucous awards show paired with the most raucous city.

The nominees and new categories were announced yesterday and you can check some of them out here, straight from MTV News:

As usual, MTV has lined up some of the hottest performers. Confirmed so far are: Rihanna, Chris Brown, Amy Winehouse, Timbaland, Kanye West, Foo Fighters with more to be announced later. Music lovers, it's going to be a great night!

Foo Fighters New Album

Apple iTunes

On the heels of an intimate club performance for 100 fans where they showcased new songs, The Foo Fighters are dishing out about their new album, Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace.

The Foos sixth studio album will be out on September 25th on RCA records. “There’s four-piece rock band shit, but then there are songs where the middle sections turn into this mass orchestrated swarm and ridiculous time signatures,” Grohl told Billboard.com of the album’s eclectic nature.

Guitarist Kaki King guests on the new track “The Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners,” inspired by two Tasmanian miners. The miners had been trapped underground for two weeks and requested an iPod with Foo Fighters music on it while awaiting their rescue. When Grohl caught wind of this he offered tickets and booze to a Foos show of the miners’ choice, and also surprised the pair with a private guitar instrumental performance. “After the show, we went and got f*ckin’ wasted in the hotel bar and I was like, ‘Dude, I promise I’m going to put this on the record.’” Grohl says of how the tune found its way on to Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace.

The band will announce a US tour slated for September and October soon.

Track list for Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace:

“The Pretender”
“Let It Die”
“Erase Replace”
“Long Road to Ruin”
“Come Alive”
“Stranger Things Have Happened”
“Cheer Up Boys, Your Makeup Is Running”
“Summer’s End”
